Paul Ayres:

details of selected works

Eight Songs

To Music (1991); To -- (1993); At the round earth's imagined corners (1996); Since there's no help (1995); Blow, blow, thou winter wind (1994); The horn, the horn, the lusty horn (1994); The Water of Tyne (1995); It is a good thing (1991).

This volume brings together all of Ayres' works for voice and piano, contemporary settings in the great English tradition of texts by Gerard Manley Hopkins, Wilfrid Owen, Donne, Shakespeare, and Michael Drayton, as well as an anonymous folk song and Psalm 92. The vocal writing is exquisitely sensitive to the texts, and the accompaniments are strikingly varied in both technique and tone. These are first-rate songs!
